Some things that you should do to stay safe on the internet is to:
1. Have the latest security software for your web browser! You could even use automatic update if your software gives you the option. You can also add extensions for your web browser, such as adblock or https everywhere, which will not only keep you safe, but get rid of all those annoying ads!
2. Make sure to protect ALL your devices that are hooked onto your internet, including ipods/tablets, smart phones, computers, and gaming devices such as an Xbox.Try getting some VPNs to help you out, not only will it make your internet faster, it will also keep you safe.
3. Make sure to scan your USBs and other external devices that could be possibly infected by a virus or malware.
4. Make your passwords extra secure by adding more necessary information. Make sure your passwords are long and strong, sometimes the website you are using will tell you how good your password is. I myself like to use a password of a bunch of random numbers and letters with and without caps that are not obvious like your favorite game, favorite team, 123, or your birthday, basically anything someone could get just by looking at your personal information. Although it may take more work, it would be safer to use a different password for everything you use. Make sure to write down your passwords and not forget them.
5. If you ever receive any fishy links in emails, tweets, posts, and online advertising, you should probably discard them, because this is how cyber criminals can compromise your computer. Quizzes on Facebook or friend request on Steam are ways they can get some personal information on you.
6. Protect yourself and your money when banking and shopping, you can trust sites that have https:// or shttp://.
7. By wary of ads and communications that implores you to act fast, if something sound too good, such as "Congratulations! You won $100,000!" its probably is a scam.
8. Remember to backup all your information, this is encase you brake your device or accidentally delete or lose your information. I use an external hard drive to back up all my computer and ipod data.
9. You should always report stolen finances or identities and all other cyber crime to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
